The 12-Point Content Checklist for the AI Search Era
Updated 2026-10-19 · this page makes no search or citation promises
The direct answer: whether AI search can understand and cite a piece of content comes down to 12 checkable items. Walking through them before publishing takes about 15 minutes. This page explains what each item means and how to judge it. The checklist has three groups: content (7), evidence (3), technical (2).
The direct answer: whether AI search can understand and cite a piece of content comes down to 12 checkable items. Walking through them before publishing takes about 15 minutes. This page explains what each item means and how to judge it. The checklist has three groups: content (7), evidence (3), technical (2).
Content (7 items)
- 1. Every core claim has an answer unit — 2-3 sentences, context-free, with subject and boundary.
- 2. Semantic headings — H2/H3 describe the real structure, not clickbait.
- 3. One topic per paragraph — engines evaluate paragraph by paragraph; mixed-topic paragraphs are hard to cite.
- 4. Explicit entities — platform names, numbers, subjects, and dates written out; no “many” or “significantly”.
- 5. Structured markup — lists for genuine enumerations, not decoration.
- 6. A reader action path — the reader knows what to do next.
- 7. No stuffing — readability was not sacrificed for keyword density (measurably negative).
Evidence (3 items)
- 8. Key claims carry evidence — data (with scope), a traceable source, or a direct quotation.
- 9. Nothing fabricated — no invented studies, customer stories, quotations, or figures.
- 10. Unverifiable facts are flagged — AI-assisted drafts list them explicitly for human confirmation.
Technical (2 items)
- 11. The page is crawlable, accessible, and loads — the shared prerequisite of GEO and SEO.
- 12. Citation spot-check — ask a question your content answers in ChatGPT or Perplexity weekly and see whether you appear.
How to use the checklist
Do not chase all 12 at once. Content items are completed while writing, evidence items before publishing, and technical items are a one-time configuration. Item 12 is a habit, not a task.
Boundary: satisfying the checklist does not guarantee citations — engines decide that. The checklist improves the part you control: quality and comprehensibility.
